Our beginning.

Uplift began in 1990 as a small group of parents of children with emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges gathering in Cheyenne for mutual support. Since then, we have grown into a statewide organization that promotes the emotional health and well-being of families across Wyoming.

lessons from geese

Our name comes from the story, “Lessons From Geese.”

"As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an “uplift”' for the bird following. By flying in a 'V' formation, the whole flock adds 71% more flying range than if each bird flew alone."

It is our intent to offer this type of support for our families.

Our beliefs.

we believe that children with special needs…

  • have a right to safely participate in community life, live with their families, and attend their local school.

  • come from a broad spectrum of families who have a variety of strengths and needs and must be treated with dignity and respect.

we believe that families of children with special needs…

  • must always be viewed as experts regarding their child when working collaboratively with non-expert observers such as educators, service providers, and clinicians.

  • are resilient and have developed many strategies to cope with the challenges their children present.

we believe that services for families and children with special needs must…

  • emphasize the identification of the child’s strengths.

  • be child-centered, family-focused, community-based and culturally competent.
